I have been working as consultant spine surgeon, independently managing the spine unit at Sparsh Hospitals, Hosur Road, Bangalore since January 2014. I am operating about 15-20 cases per month. I have performed more than 1000 surgeries during this period, which included the whole spectrum of spinal surgeries from cervical spine to sacrum. I have a special interest in spinal deformity and cervical spine disorders. I have operated on more than 100 cases of scoliosis in last 8 years with varying degrees of complexity. I have operated on a good number of cervical spine disorders, both anterior and posterior approaches. The patients operated here also include international patients from Middle East, Mauritius, and Africa. I have a passion for research, specifically in scoliosis and have published 6 articles on scoliosis in international journals during the last 2 years. I have written a chapter on “Posterior Scoliosis Correction- Indications, Planning and Operative Techniques” in textbook “Pediatric Scoliosis” to published by Springer publications. I also have some ongoing research projects on scoliosis and working closely with Professor KV Menon on these projects.
I joined the spine unit of reputed Sparsh Hospitals from 1st November 2012 and worked along with Dr Thomas Kishen (head of spine unit). During this period, we operated on a range of spine disorders including degenerative spine, spinal deformity, cervical spine, spinal trauma, spinal infections, and tumors. While degenerative spine and spinal trauma made a large share of cases, we also operated on significant numbers of scoliosis (21 cases in 2012/13). Sparsh Vachana, a charitable program for the treatment of poor children, is conducted every year at this hospital. I had the privilege to participate in this program during 2012/13 as a spine surgeon.
As a member of SICOT, I was awarded this fellowship under the “SICOT meets SICOT” program. I spent 4 weeks in the spine unit of the Aarhus University hospital from January 1st to 31st 2013 under the supervision of Prof Cody Bunger. The hospital being a referral care center, deals with wide range of spinal disorders. The volume of cases operated here is great. During my 4 weeks stay, I participated in 30 odd cases. Spinal deformity, degenerative spine and spinal tumors make a major share of cases operated at this center.
I was selected as an AO Spine Fellow (6 months fellowship) at AIMS, Kochi after an interview. The fellowship period was from February 22nd, 2012, to September 10th, 2012. This fellowship was equally divided between Neurosurgery (3 months) & Orthopedics (3 months). In Neurosurgery, I had a good exposure in cranio-cervical disorders, intraspinal tumors, cervical spine disorders, spinal trauma, vertebroplasty and lumbar degenerative disorders. I assisted all the cases as first assistant with Dr Sajesh Menon and operated independently under supervision. My skills of microsurgery have improved a great deal and I am confident of working with microscope after an extensive training during this period. In Orthopedics, I had a good exposure to scoliosis, spinal tumors, spinal infections, spinal trauma, and degenerative disorders. I was actively involved in the surgical planning of all scoliosis cases and assisted about 30 cases as a first assistant with Dr Renjit Kumar J. I also had a great opportunity to assist a reasonable number of spinal tumor surgeries (like Total En-bloc spondylectomy). I operated several cases independently under supervision. I compiled a database of all the scoliosis cases operated between 2001 to 2011. I have been keenly involved in the research of scoliosis with Prof KV Menon and Prof Renjit Kumar J. My key areas of interest are shoulder balance and cosmesis, selection of fusion levels etc.
I worked as trauma fellow in orthopedic department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hongkong from 14th September to 10th October under the supervision of Dr Shen WY.
I worked as Orthopedic Fellow under the supervision of Mr. Marinis Pirpiris at Epworth Hospitals and Cabrini Hospital at Melbourne from February 2011 to July 2011. I also had the privilege to work with Mr. David de La Harpe, who is a spinal surgeon working at Epworth. During the consulting sessions, I learnt aspects of diagnosis of degenerative spinal pathology. I assisted him in microdiscectomies, laminectomies and nerve root blocks.
I worked as a registrar in the Orthopedic department of PGIMER, Chandigarh from January 2009 to February 2011 after completing my MS Orthopedics in December 2008.As a senior resident I independently managed the orthopedic outpatient clinics, performed most of the trauma and other basic surgeries independently and took bedside teaching classes for the junior residents. I grew as a surgeon during this period. As a junior registrar (January 2009-December 2009), I performed various basic trauma surgeries, pediatric orthopedic surgeries, basic spine surgeries and deformity corrections independently. As a senior registrar (January 2010-February 2011), I dedicated my time working in the spine unit since that was my primary interest. I performed anterior cervical spine instrumentation, posterior thoracic and lumbar instrumentation, lumbar discectomy, anterior thoracic and thoracolumbar decompression with instrumentation independently under supervision of senior consultants.
Since I have a special interest in spine surgery, I was actively involved in the spine unit of our hospital. I assisted variety of spine surgeries during the initial year of senior residency and performed posterior instrumentation for thoracolumbar spinal trauma, discectomies independently. During the second year as a registrar, I performed anterior cervical discectomy and corpectomy, anterior decompression and instrumentation of lower thoracic and upper lumbar fractures, reduction, and instrumentation of spondylolisthesis independently and under supervision.
After qualifying in a competitive national level entrance examination, I secured a post-graduate position in Orthopedics at the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. I worked as orthopedic resident here between Jan 2006 to Dec 2008. I underwent the 3 years structured and comprehensive postgraduate training in Orthopedic Surgery and obtained MS (Master of Surgery) in Orthopedics at the end of the training in Dec 2008. I obtained training in all the subspecialties of orthopedics, namely Arthroplasty, Arthroscopy, Spine, Trauma and Pediatric orthopedics during postings in Trauma ward, Accident & Emergency ward, Orthopedic Specialty ward in Nehru Hospital, an 1800 bedded multispecialty post graduate teaching hospital, which is a major tertiary care referral hospital in northwestern India.
