Mr B, an 18 year old boy, a resident of Chikkaballapur in Karnataka, presented to us with progressively increasing deformity of the back since childhood. He avoided long play and strenuous exercise due to easy fatigability. On further evaluation, he was found to have a scoliosis due to split cord malformation and tethered cord. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain into the spine to control the balance and action of the body muscles. A split cord malformation is a condition where the spinal cord is split and has a bone or cartilage in between which does not allow the cord to move. This patient initially underwent a surgery to remove the bony bar in split cord to release the spinal cord and then the scoliosis was corrected under neuromonitoring (taking care to avoid paralysis due to spinal cord stretching) at Sparsh Hospital, Bommasandra by Dr. Naveen Tahasildar – Spine Surgeon in Bangalore. After a successful correction, the boy was back to his college by a month. He leads a productive life and is under regular follow-up.
